CREST participated in the Becoming Everything You Are (BEYA) Science, Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM) Conference at the Baltimore Convention Center in Maryland from February 16 to 17, 2024. Mr. César Ortiz, CREST Office Manager and Dr. Liubov Kreminska, Administrative Director of the Earth System and Environmental Engineering (ESE) Degree Program at CCNY represented the institute at the event.
On its first day, the conference provided career professionals and universities a unique opportunity to meet with high school students. This engagement helped students gain crucial information on potential college choices and future career paths. As recruiters representing the CREST Institute and the Grove School of Engineering, Mr. Ortiz and Dr. Kreminska interacted with over seventy-five (75) students who approached the CREST booth to learn about the vast opportunities available within the City College, ESE, and CESSRST. The Environmental Engineering program was one of the highlights for students. They were also interested in the CESSRST fellowship funded by NOAA EPP/MSI and the vast degree programs offered at CCNY, particularly at the Grove School of Engineering.
Commenting on his experience of the conference, Mr. Ortiz said, “This conference was unique in incorporating high school youth who are still navigating through their college and career plans. As recruiters, we appreciated the opportunity to engage and provide information on our programs of study to ultimately help these students with their college decisions. The diversity of the student audience, especially the high schoolers, was instrumental in engaging K-12 communities, which the CREST Institute already embraces through its CUNY HIRES summer program, connecting engineering for high school students with STEM, which has successfully served as a pipeline for students with engineering.”
